Full Spectrum LED — What Does It Actually Mean?
If you've shopped for grow lights in the last few years, you've seen "Full Spectrum" plastered on every product page. But what does it actually mean? And does it matter for your grow?
The Short Answer
Full spectrum means the light emits wavelengths across the entire PAR range (400–700nm) — mimicking natural sunlight. This includes blue, green, red, and far-red light in proportions that plants can use throughout their entire life cycle.

Why Full Spectrum Wins

- Green light matters: Blurple lights skip green wavelengths, but research shows green light penetrates deeper into the canopy, reaching lower leaves that red/blue can't.
- Easier plant inspection: Under white light, you can actually see leaf color, spot deficiencies, and catch pests. Under blurple, everything looks purple.
What About "Enhanced" Spectrums?
Some manufacturers offer spectrum variants:
- R-Spec (Red enhanced): Extra 660nm deep red for flowering. Slightly better bud development.
- UV/IR enhanced: Adds ultraviolet or infrared diodes. Claims of increased trichome production — research is mixed but promising.
- Veg-specific: Higher blue ratio for compact vegetative growth. Useful but not necessary with a dimmable full-spectrum light.
